Put the Weed Down…For Now!
Why Taking a Tolerance Break Is Essential For Every Stoner

This is coming from someone who smokes every day, multiple times a day. My daily motto is get fly, get high. I am a stoner, connoisseur, and cultivator who loves smoking fye cannabis regularly. But, mid-sesh, I started thinking: When was the last time I took an actual tolerance break? My last T-break, a period when I stopped consuming, was in 2024 and lasted five days.
So yeah, it’s definitely time for another one, but we’ll get into that later.
People often suggest that cannabis consumers are addicted. I stay elevated, but I’ll argue that I’m not addicted. I enjoy my high experiences. Yes, I want to smoke before and after every task. Yes, I wake and bake.
Life is better when you’re high!
Consuming cannabis isn’t just for recreational purposes. Weed also has many medicinal properties. I am NOT a doctor! But I personally consume to relieve my anxiety, increase my appetite, get better sleep, explore my creativity more deeply, and socialize more easily.
I can do all these things just fine without cannabis, but adding weed makes me feel better, lighter, and heightens my performance.
So no judgment when I say it’s okay to take a T-break because all good things, including weed, need a timeout sometimes.
T-breaks help rest our endocannabinoid systems, yet why do we resist taking them?
Routine: Weed is a part of our daily rituals, like the after-work J to help wind down.
FOMO: Cannabis is community. It can be difficult not to partake in a smoke sesh featuring your favorite people and fye weed.
Discomfort: Sometimes we experience irritability, decreased appetite, sleep issues, vivid dreams, or other related symptoms.
Misinformation: A T-break doesn’t need to be long to be effective; short breaks help too.
Emotional & Mental Crutches: Weed is beneficial, but it’s okay to remove the safety net.
But why are T-breaks necessary?
Reset: Allow your body’s cannabinoid receptors to rest, so that smaller amounts of cannabis feel stronger again, and the benefits are more effective.
Burnout: Heavy consumption without breaks can cause physical or emotional changes.
Save $$: The higher the tolerance, the more products needed, and the more money spent.
Release Dependency: Allow your body to naturally relearn how to regulate sleep, mood, and appetite.
Discipline: Healthy consumption should feel intentional, rather than habitual.
Listen, I wouldn’t encourage you to do anything that I’m not pushing myself to do. So, I took a tolerance break, and here are my notes:
Day 1-2: Too easy. I grabbed my rolling tray, grinder, and papers, packed them into my pouch, and put them aside. I stopped consuming all cannabis cold turkey. I didn’t take my usual mid-day nap. I also had trouble falling asleep at night. I felt less tired overall.
Day 3-4: My smoke pouch was still tucked away. My desire to consume wasn’t deep, but I thought about it in habit. Working on a creative project without weed felt doable but different. I was still wide awake throughout the day and night.
Day 5-7: My energy was naturally higher. I felt more focused and didn’t take any midday naps. But I missed creating while high. No consuming = no munchies = a very little appetite. I still wasn’t tired and had a hard time falling asleep. I’m surprised my T-break lasted this long.
Day 8-9: Please don’t piss me off! I was very irritable these days. Everything and everyone got on my nerves. All the feelings from prior days remained.
Day 10: My natural sleep schedule and appetite were back! I was still very irritable, though. I deeply desired hearing my grinder clinking and papers crumbling as I roll up. I stayed strong and didn’t break my T-break.
Day 11: Nothing was worse than being on a T-break in a social setting where everyone was lit. It was still fun, but I wasn’t on their frequency. 11 days of no cannabis. I’m proud of myself.
Day 12: I’m not going to lie, I folded! I was in another social setting and definitely hit the J when it came my way. T-break over! I missed weed so much.
I made it 12 days, which isn’t too long, but longer than last year’s T-break. I love cannabis, but this pause helped me refresh and remember to be intentional with how I consume. So again, I encourage you to put the weed down, for now!
Because sometimes, the best high comes after a tolerance break.
Get fly, Get high.
